IBM Proprinter Case Study - Product Success

Right Left
The Proprinter was developed in only two-and-one-half years and made IBM the low-cost producer of personal dot matrix printers. The reduction in development time and manufacturing cost can be attributed to the employment of multifunctional teams, design for assembly, and concurrent engineering.

The Proprinter also increased the functionality of personal computer printers. None of these advances were made at the expense of quality. The Proprinter achieved a reliability of one failure every 20 years.

The Proprinter design was recognized with several awards and became the best selling personal printer in the United States.
